As a 5x Major League Baseball All-Star, there were many times where I was “in the zone.” The crowd was silent, the baseball moved in slow motion looking like a beach ball and everything that could go right did. Away from the baseball diamond, my heart yearned to “be in the zone” as well where I could have peace and joy despite the circumstances in my life. Dr Bill’s book will help you play your game and live your life “in the zone!” This book will not only help you to be the greatest athlete you can be but it will inspire you to be the SAINT God calls you to be.

I just wanted to relay a quick story involving your recent excellent book. My daughter is currently a High School senior at Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News, Va. She is a very faithful Catholic and serious student and her path to college selection has led her in your direction. We visited BAC ten days ago, toured the campus, visited the Adoration chapel, attended Mass and met with the Cross Country father and daughter coaching team. The night we arrived in Charlotte, I began reading your book. I just finished it this past weekend and have been recommending it to everyone. This morning, I met with Peninsula Catholic’s Principal and AD on a controversial issue involving one of the coaches. I am Chairman of the Athletic Advisory Board for the school and one of the roles of the Board is to assist with ensuring adherence to Catholic traditions and teachings. In the course of our discussion, I mentioned the story about St. Philip Neri and the plucked chicken, and then strongly recommended to the AD that he get a copy of your book and read it. Much to my surprise, he told me that he had received a copy in the mail (from you) the day before and had just started reading it. As my father always says, there are no coincidences. I hope he will share it with all of his coaches.

Dr. Thierfelder has authored a terrific book that studies the exploration of sports and easily transfers winning strategies to our everyday lives. His unique writing ability closely teaches us how to separate daily challenges into winning moments. It is a book for teachers and leaders as well as for those searching to achieve bigger and better things.

This is a outstanding book that should be assigned reading for every educator and coach at the elementary, high school , college & university level. Parents would also benefit from reading it and clearly their children would be the beneficiaries of informed, pragmatic, wise and compassionate caregivers.

Those of us in athletics education and administration (I am the commissioner of an NCAA conference) often perceive championship performance only in terms of points, time or trophies. This book recognizes the benefit of student athletes and their mentors striving for those measures of championship performance and goes further to explore and suggest the path to championship performance for a lifetime and even beyond.
I am providing copies to athletics directors in our conference and will encourage them to share with those on their campuses. Coaches and administrators will find specific skills and ways to benefit motivated athletes. Students will be exposed to the habits, attitudes and sacrifice required to navigate competition and life. Faculty and others not directly in athletics see and appreciate the similarities of outstanding performance regardless of the discipline.
The examples and stories make it a good read. The life lessons and integration of physical, mental and spiritual peak performance make it a great read.
Alan Patterson, Commissioner Conference Carolinas
This is a book about choosing your goals. Well written. Excellent advice to people of all ages. I’ve given this book to many people and all have loved it.

Since his days as an Olympian, later as a longtime member of the American College of Sports Medicine, a Knight of Malta and most recently, as the President of Belmont Abbey College, Dr. Bill Thierfelder is known by the company he keeps. For example, the Foreward to his new book, “Less Than a Minute to Go” is written by his good friend, the Coach of Duke’s basketball team, Mike Krzyzeski. Having one of the winningest and most ethical coaches in sports offer his praise for Dr. Bill’s book encouraged me to consider thoughtfully what follows.
What impressed me most about reading Less Than a Minute to Go, was not just Bill’s perspective as a sports psychologist but more importantly how this man of faith, weaved in his Catholic beliefs into such a readable story. I have already passed this book onto my boys and encouraged them to read it to my grandchildren. Finally, have grown up in the greater Chicagoland area, I was familiar with another famous coach: Amos Alonzo Stagg. What I someone how missed was Coach Stagg’s letter to his son (see page 166-167) If you purchase this book, it will be worth it if only to read Coach Stagg’s letter to his son.
As the founder of The Character Building Project site, I shamelessly lift Dr. Bill’s quote from Pope Pius XII which follows: “Sport, properly directed develops character, makes a man courageous, a generous loser and a gracious victor; it refines the senses, gives intellectual penetration, and steels the will to endurance.
Thank you Dr. Bill for providing your readers with the knowledge, “you always have a choice. No matter what happens to you in life, however much it appears to be out of your control, you are the one who decides how you’re going to deal with it.”

I thought about what I wanted to say about you and the book for a while. To say a couple sentences wouldn’t do justice for how much you helped me. Here’s the simple version.
Through your teachings I found that there is much more to life than just scoring baskets but rather trusting that everything is meant for a reason. Your philosophies enabled me to see the deeper meanings to my successes and failures on and off the court. I now know that through hard work and staying true to my spirituality, I can never lose!

Playing 20 years in professional baseball taught me many of the lessons in
Dr. Bill’s book. I only wish I had his book to read when I started my career so I could have avoided some of the hard lessons that took me longer to learn.

Excellent book with great message! I loved the personal stories shared by Dr. Thierfelder and how he related them to the points he was making. I set this book aside for a while, but when I picked it up and really made my way through it, it related with everything I was trying to accomplish with my own business and personal life. His points regarding knowing the details of your sport related perfectly with where I was with learning the details of my business and trying to take it to the next level. Through clarity we obtain peace and this book takes you step by step. As an athlete myself it was interesting seeing the similarities made between sport and life, both business and personal. His summary about the importance of God and the spiritual throughout tied everything together which truly brought home the importance of each of us realizing our own peak performance. A great read, thank you!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading ” Less Than A Minute To Go. Indeed, I read it twice because the combination of psychology and Christian virtue is so meaningful. There are so many gems of wisdom. I would recommend this book for Christian individuals of all ages and sports teams representing Christian schools. Dr Bill has so many life experiences with ” big time ” athletes that support the points he makes in this book. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Bill at the Sports Faith award meeting and he is very impressive. Like wise, the book is also quite good. It is a must read.

This is perhaps one of the Best Book that I have ever read on “Living”! How Dr. Thierfelder included so many important facts of life into so few pages is astronomical ! Nike says “Just Do it” Dr Thierfelder says “JUST LIVE IT”. and he tells you precisely how to do it!
It is a very powerful read !

This book is so much more than the title would lead you to expect, and it is not because the title is poor. Bill Thierfelder covers so much more than the closing stages of a sporting competition. He fascinates the reader by demonstrating that there are practically no absolute limits to what a human can do. He does so with the aid of true stories of extraordinary performances whose peaks often exceed what is humanly explainable. Many of the lessons on how such peak performances can be attained are applicable to the business world and life in general, making this book of great interest to so many.
I have read many books on how to improve performance (mainly business) and of the self-help kind but this book cannot be confined to either category – it is EXTRA ordinary.
I strongly recommend it!

This book is precisely what our family was looking for as Dr. Thierfelder hit a “home run” with his insightful, thought provoking messages. Obtaining peak performance in any sport can be quite challenging, but after reading this book I certainly feel our family (two children competing in Division I sports) has been afforded an “edge” vs the competition. A must read for any aspiring athlete and their parents.

Dr Thierfelders’ book is a recipe book on virtue based achievement in your chosen field of endeavor, whether athletics, business or just living. Dr Thierfelders’ success, as an athlete, coach, teacher, college president, with the his underlying knowledge of psychology based on a courageous commitment to his religious faith, give this book a credibility that few books can have.
For anyone seeking a substantive challenge to a success filled life, this is a powerful read.

The many stories about athletes and others make this an entertaining read. However, the underlying message makes this an important read. My sincere thanks to Dr. Thierfelder for writing this book and therefore sharing this message with us.

Dr. Thierfelder was my trainer in college and in my early years as a pro. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it was not for him and his teachings. It’s exciting that he has put down on paper his beliefs and ideas regarding how to achieve peak performance in your everyday life. That’s what makes this book fantastic to read. It’s easy to understand and anybody can relate to it. Thank you coach for everything you did for me in my career! Andy
